External Hard Drive wanting me to format it before use

Hello,

when I try to open my external hard drive which contains all my files, a message pope up stating you need to format you local disk drive D before using it. I really don't want to loose my very important files so can any one assist me to solve such problem.

Plug in the drive, bring up CMD, type chkdsk O: /f/r (O is the example drive letter yours may be different). Win will rebuild the file system and all will be fine.
