hi I had a similar problem, although it the problem developed into the drive (WD external) not being accessible.
the result was the electronics that the drive uses within the case were damaged. I took it to data recovery & got everything back.
I have seen videos on you tube where the casing was taken apart & the drive connected to usb port using purchased hardware.
