No sound on Toshiba laptop

I have tried nearly everything to get the sound on my laptop working, but nothing works. I uninstall and reinstall the drivers and have tried Fixit on the Microsoft website, applying fixes. Nada. The high def audio controller has an exclamation point next to it in the Device manager. Checking on the sound icon in the bottom tray of the computer gives me the message that no audio output device is installed.

I have pretty much run out of things I found to try. Anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong?
