Gateway Problems help please.

Hello, I have a gateway laptop it will come on then go to screen says gateway then next screen asks for password once you put in password the next screen is just black no desktop any suggestion on how to fix this should I order a windows 8.1 disk to reinstall the system it was working fine.

The Win 8.1 reinstall sounds like a good plan.
