Western Digital 1TB external HDD my passport

When plugged in the light on the Hard drive lights up. That's about it, no sounds coming from the drive and nothing on the computer indicating that it is working. I've done some research and is sounds like I might be able to replace the board, but that's a long shot also because I have to find the right board. I've also tried plugging it in other computers and still nothing. I really don't want to have to spend $700-$1700 to get it fixed so if anyone can help please.

Hi there,

I would recommend you to try the drive with another USB cable. Is the drive missing from Device Manager and Disk Management? Are there any strange noises, coming from the drive? I would recommend you to use a Linux Live CD in order to try to save your data. Do you have warranty left? If you have, you may get a drive replacement. Talking about the board replacement, my opinion is that it may not be worth it. As you said, it is expensive and there is a small chance to make it work.

Hope this helps
