Hi there,
I would recommend you to try the drive with another USB cable. Is the drive missing from Device Manager and Disk Management? Are there any strange noises, coming from the drive? I would recommend you to use a Linux Live CD in order to try to save your data. Do you have warranty left? If you have, you may get a drive replacement. Talking about the board replacement, my opinion is that it may not be worth it. As you said, it is expensive and there is a small chance to make it work.
