more information please
Actually my brother has got an external hard disk from Australia. When I connect it to my PC(windows Xp), it doesn not show anything as in the hardware is not detected, thought the light emits in the hard disk.Also if I connect it to my brother's Laptop(Vista), it works very well. What should I do?

Sounds like XP either doesnt have the usb driver installed OR it's just not compatible with your USB socket (could be v1.1 not v2.0)
