Hi Buffy,
I would start with searching the drive in Disk Management. Is it visible there? Does it have a file format and a drive letter? It should appear with a blue line above the drive. If the drive is not listed there or is not listed correctly, search for it in Device Manager, under USB devices. Uninstall it, restart the PC and plug the device back in. The OS should reinstall the drivers. Check if the issue persists.
Try the external on another PC and with another USB cable. If the drive has a drive letter, try using the chkdsk D: /r command from the Command Prompt, where D should be the drive letter of the drive.
