Can't access my hard drive on my new computer

Hello,

i recently purchased a new apple computer and I'm trying to access my external hard drive. its not showing up! what do i do?? i want to access my picture! please help!!!

If you open Disk Utility, (Applications/Utilities) does it appear?

i dont see it in the disk utility either! normally with my older macbook i would just plug it in and it would just pop up on the main screen. this computer i plugged it in and i hear noise as if it was loading, but then nothing happens. help please!
