Laptop goes off when unplugged

What type of brand and laptop model do you have? What do you mean by "unplugging the laptop"? Do you refer to the battery or to the charger? Have you tried to boot the lappy with only battery or the charger inserted? I think the problem lies in the power management options and not in the display settings.
In order to be able to help you in a better way I need you to provide me with more detailed information regarding your case.
