Computer won't boot

Hello,
My gateway computer won't boot it goes to a black screen with writing on it I'm trying to reinstall windows XP on it up not sure how can someone please tell me how to do this thanks

Who said to re-install anything?

Let us start with is this a PC or a laptop?
