Playstation Internet Connection

Hello,

I am trying to connect my Playstation 3 to the internet through my wireless router which is on the main level. The Playstation 3 is in the basement and I am stepping through the instructions but never received the option of what preferred internet connection wireless or wired? it just says to connect the Ethernet cable. Do I need to connect a modem into the Playstation 3 in order to get the option to select wireless? or does anybody know why I would not have this option?
