Let's say that in a group chat on WhatsApp, a user opens the chat where 10 messages were sent since they last opened it. If the user only saw the last of the new messages, why are all 10 of the messages marked as "seen" by the user?

Hi,

It may be a glitch of the app... WhatsApp has detected that 10 messages have been missed and by loading on the phone of that person, they've been marked as seen.

From what I researched, the app is designed that way. Even if 100 new messages were sent in the group chat, as soon as a recipient opens the chat, all 100 will be marked as "seen" by that recipient. I am trying to understand why Whatsapp is designed that way. Marking a message as "seen" is supposed to give useful information to the sender of the messages. But if those messages aren't actually seen by a recipient, that information is inaccurate and useless.

I think it's designed that way because they consider that a person will spontaneously go to see all the messages they've missed. But I agree that it should be marked as seen only if a message is really seen normally...
