I am using a Maxtor One Touch External hard drive. I put files on it, could move or copy most of them. Some of the larger files gave me a device i/o error or an data error (cyclic redundancy check).
I tried this and it worked, can move or copy all of the files.
WIN XP
start
run
chkdsk e: /r
(e=Maxtor external hard drive).
If your files are on your internal drive, type that drive letter instead.
try it.......I stumbled upon this fix, and it totally did the trick!!!!
Also this would fix read errors I would think, as per your question.
