Battery "charging" but not charging

My Dell Inspirion 1150, 5 years old, is not charging its battery when connected to AC adaptor. Power meter reads "charging," but battery level keeps dropping. I tried removing/reinstalling battery, and that worked enough to raise batterylevel from 70% to 87%, but then it started dropping again. I'm afraid it will run out and I won't be able to boot up. Any advice?

I had the same problem with my Dell Precision M60 it's also 5 years old, I solved the problem by buying a new battery runs good now, no problem.

Thanks for your reply. I'll test a new battery.
I've had multiple problems with this machine, literally from day 1. It's now on its fifth motherboard. Fortunately it was on extended warranty until a month ago.
This is the second battery from one of the repairs.
Don't think I'll buy Dell again when I replace, which may be soon.
