Can not get internet connection Closed

Question

Hello,
Need Help No internet 
My HD crashed and and i bought copy of the OS from a local shop. I installed it and put in my key from the side of the box. Everything seems fine except there was no internet explorer files. 
I downloaded the chipset and installed. It says the drivers are installed and the device is working. Also i can not get IE on my computer because it says it is missing a patch. I installed Firefox from my flash drive. Does my computer need IE to connect to the net?

Also I installed an copy of Windows XP Home edition on it and I had no problems (I dont own the copy so I cant keep it).. but I removed it and tried to put the original OS on it again. and still can not get a connection.  


 I have the cable plugged into the NIC card and installed all the drivers from the CD. The lights on the NIC are flashing, but I am getting nothing.The little computers that are susposed to show your connection in the system tray are not there.
