Need help restoring ipod please

Hello,
So I have the 5th generation ipod nano (the one that can take videos) and I don't know what happened but when i plugged it into my computer it messed up and said that itunes doesn't recognize my ipod and to restore it to factory settings, but if I do that then everything on my ipod gets erased and I don't want that to happen especially because I already have videos on it. I want to know if there's a way that I can restore my ipod without it erasing or deleting anything off of it or if there's something else I can do. Please help me :). Thanks!
