Do i need to upgrade my computer (windows xp)

I got sims 3 for my birthday and i can't get it to work.
the man who sold it to me said that i might have to upgrade my computer?
He told me to go on www.doseitwork.com or www.doiwork.co.uk and i have tried that and they don't tell me anything :( |so sad|
