After installing windows 7, my itunes files got either moved or renamed and now ipod wont sync to itunes.

Dear Sir,

Please indicate whether you made a back up of the specific files before installing another operating system.

I hadn't backed up my music for a while and when windows 7 was installed a lot of music was lost that hadn't been backed up. Itunes allowed me to download all my purchased songs again. I have over 4,000 songs in itunes and when windows 7 was installed my music got renamed and or moved so my ipod will not sync. I don't feel knowledgeable enough to change or rename my music files. What can I do to syne my ipod with itunes and not jeopardize loosing or misplacing my music ?
