Compaq Evo N610c has black screen

When I power on my computer the screen stays black. If I shine a bright light on it I can see the screen, as if the backlighting is out. How can I fix this? What's causing it? I have had 3 of these same laptops & all three have had this same problem. Please help.

It's either the backlight or the inverter that supplies power to the backlight. Repair is best done by a professional. But, these computers are 7 to 8 years old and not worth the $100 to $150 that it would cost to fix.
