My ipod is a vegetable :'(

Hello,

My ipod was working fine. Then I decided to plug it into the computer to add more stuff. When I plugged it in, a box said "Found New Hardware- There was a problem installing this hardware". Then when I click finish, another box comes up that says "Apple Mobile Device(Recovery Mode)". It says "Install software automatically(recommended)" so I click it and then click next. Then it says "Cannot install this software". I tried restarting the computer, but that didn't help any. I also tried to "Run Diagnostics" on itunes and it says "ipod not connected". Plus my ipod doesn't show up on itunes. I don't know what else to try. Please help me :(
