You need to have songs on your pc whether you purchase from a paid site or download it from a free site itunes dosent have a problem with that
only the songs which you want to put in your ipod you have to drag drop them in first itunes and then click synchronize all the songs you draged dropped in itunes will now be downloaded to your ipod same goes for the videos too
and windows media player dosent sync with ipods
