Greetings Ben,
The first part of the diagnostic is to determine if the problem comes from your monitor or from your graphic card or your cable connection.
First check your cable connection.
If possible, try to borrow a monitor which is in good working order to plug in your CPU. If you experience the same problem, the problem may come from your graphic/video card which may need to be cleaned or replaced.

I tried another monitor and its the same thing. It will work up until the windows xp screen comes on and then the monitor turns off. the computer itself still makes noises but nothing id displaed on the screen.
