Internet no connection

Hello,

Hi I just got some internet service and it works awsome with my laptop but it doesn't work on my desktop its detects it but doesn't connect. its says somthing like aquirring network
address. its connected to the ethernet port i have a windows xp from hp please help

Its a cable modem from Charter Communications. I've also tried using a USB cable but nothing.
