My laptop's fan won't stop running. During start up, it shows malfunction level 01 please return to normal running mode. It doesn't show the usual Dell Logo during loading and proceeds to the windows start up. Is this a software problem or a hardware problem?

Hi Golda18,

Dell Logo not appearing on initial startup might happen because of BIOS corruption. BIOS is the initial setup program that is launched before the computer boots to windows. You can read more about BIOS from the below mentioned link:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&docid=276573&doclang=en&l=en&s=gen&cs=

Updating the BIOS may fix the problem. Also, sometimes fan issues happen because of BIOS problems. You can download the Latest BIOS from our support site:

http://support.dell.com/

Note: If a BIOS update is not performed properly, it can actually harm your system. It is best to review the release notes. Also, review the instructions that are included with the BIOS update software, prior to performing an update. If you need any help in finding and updating the correct BIOS for your machine do reply with the exact system model number. Dell Inspiron 14R can mean any one of the below mentioned system models:

1. Dell Inspiron 7420
2. Dell Inspiron 5420
3. Dell Inspiron N4110

Please revert for clarification.
