... although connected to the internet (I get updates without any problems, as well as time and weather), the browser's page (Chrome, Firefox or I.E.) opens but it doesn't go any farther. The small round icon keeps turning to no end and I can't access any e-mail and/or webpages.

I have an ASUS laptop, equipped with Window 7. I have talked to my internet provider who has confirmed that I am connected to the internet; run CCleaner, antivirus, etc... to not avail.

I am of course typing this note at home on another computer that doesn't have the problem.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Hello and thanks for your reply. No, I haven't tried to" boot in safe mode". Forgive me for my ignorance, but how do you do that?

Hello!

I did boot in Safe mode and I couldn't access the internet. Same scenario: I get a piece of a first page (sometimes a blank page) and the icon turns, turns, turns... Yesterday, I called again my internet provider who confirmed that the computer is shown being connected. After complete diagnostic from his part, he recommended that I take my computer to a repair shop... What do you think?

Thank you again for your help; very much appreciated!

Hello

From any mode, go to all programmes and click on tool and then on system restore. Choose restore to a previous time. Locate a date indicated in bold and choose one prior to the appearance of the issue, click on next. Hopefully your system will be restored without the issue.

Good luck

P.S. There will be no lost in data

Thank you. I did all that you said but when it came to restoring to a previous time, only 2 updates are listed (the 2 and 3rd of January 2014) and the problem I have dates from two weeks ago and since the computer has been receiving several updates of all kinds...

Thank you again!

As I said, pick the date previous to the issue. It should not affect the updates and if it should, they can be redownloaded and installed through Windows update application. You can go back to December.

The date previous to the issue is not listed. It would have to be before December 20 and this date is not listed. The issue began on December 20, not 3 days ago. How can I go back to December updates? I do not see any way to get more choices than the 2 that are listed (for January 2 and 3).

Thank you.

What is you antivirus?

Do you have access to another computer where you download a tool to a pendrive?

Let's make one test:

Remove Chrome as it often creates conflicts.

Disable your antivirus and see if you can connect with Firefox

My antivirus is the free version of Avast and yes, I have another computer (the one I am using now to type this comment).

I don't know what is a "pendrive" though...

Did you remove Chrome and disabled your antivirus (temporarily) ?

A pendrive is also called a flash drive see this picture of one

OK, I know now what is a pendrive :) I call it a USB key...

I wasn't home and will do now what you told me: uninstall Chrome and disable my antivirus. I'll get back at you as soon as I am done.

Thanks!

When I disable AVAST (the antivirus) the browser works!!!!
First I took out Chrome and tried to see if I could open Firefox.... NO.
Then I disabled the antivirus and Firefox - as well as every other webpages I clicked on - opened!

So, now... what do I do??? I need an antivirus... cannot surf the web without its protection!

You are a genius! :)

You are correct you cannot go without an antivirus, it's a must!

I am not familiar with Avast which in my opinion is one at the bottom of the scale compared F-Secure and Kaspersky.

If you wish to Avast, you must look around to disable the function which prevents your browser from surfing.

If your Avast is the free version, I can suggest a better free av to you.

Best regards

P.S. Thanks for the compliment but I work with logic.

I looked on the web about issues caused by Avast and the one I have encountered with the browser is one of them.... so, yes, I do need a good - and free if possible - antivirus to replace Avast. Can you recommend a good one?

I wish to thank you again for all your patient - and expert - help. It was really super nice of you to take the time to explain to me all the steps to take.

Happy New Year!

Great ! You are most welcome.

One last suggestion:

Download CCleaner and run it to clean your cache and the registry, just to ensure to rid any crumbs left behind by Avast. Here is the download link:

Au revoir et bonne chance
