Hi there,
Try to reinstall your HDD's drivers from the Device Manager. Try to update your drive's firmware from the WD web page. I leave you a link below.
I would recommend you to use the Diskpart command from the CMD. I leave you details in the link below.
Type cmd in the Start Search Bar. Open the cmd as an Administrator. Type "diskpart", and then "list volume" to show your volumes. Select your external drive with the command select "volume N" (N being the number of your external). You should get a message "Volume N is the selected volume". Then write "assign letter=J" (or any letter which is not in use and you like). You should get a message that "Diskpart successfully assigned the drive letter".
Try your hard drive with different USB cable and on another PC. You can even try Linux Live CD, which sometimes grants enough access to be able to backup your files.
