Cd/dvd drive on W Vista not playing n e thing

Hello,
I have a Windows Vista HP Compaq Combo cd/dvd drive and i cannot play any cd's/dvd's?? I put a cd etc in and the light on the front flashing but then stops? The fans at the back of the hard drive are going but i can't hear the sound it makes when it boots up?? Me and my partner did move the desk(with hardrive on it, stupidly) and think that could be the cause. I have also gone into device manager and it says my cd drive is ok and working fine but it's fibbing!! :( i don't really want to download all these software packages on my computer as to be honest i don't know much about them and not sure exactly what i'm installing. I want to try and take it apart but don't really know if there is a problem what i am looking for??

Does anyone know what i can do please??

trouble with your sound driver or did you try playing your dvd on VLC player?

Ok that was strange. I played a dvd in the cd/dvd drive and the light was flashing(a lot which was exciting as it wasn't constant flashing before), nothing came on the screen when usually it asks me what i want to do with the cd or goes straight to windows media but i went into w media and it looked like the computer was trying to find something so i tried clicking on play and it came up(at the top left hand side of the bar)windows media is not responding.
I tried to click out and it came up with the questions about how media is not responding and i clicked on that it should try and find a problem and solution, the box dissapeared and nothing happened.
I opened the cd/dvd tray and the disc was still spinning, when i put the cd back in nothing?? The light flashed then stopped as before.
