I have tried the take out the cable and battery, hold start button for 15 seconds, replace battery and cable then press start and this does not work. I also tried restarting using F8, it is the same, no screen loads, I get a couple of clicks like things are about to go into action, then nothing, the screen is still totally black. Any ideas anyone?

You can try transferring the hard disk to a USB hard drive enclosure and use it as an external drive on your new laptop. Perhaps a local PC repair shop will sell you the enclosure and transfer the drive. That way on only buy the enclosure if the drive works.

Good luck
