I need help in formating my external hard drive

Hello,
I have WD My Book Essential External Hard Drive, 2TB and was using it regularly in Windows 8. Suddenly today when I plugged it in it showed me "You need to format the disk before you use it". Previously when it was working fine it shows security login screen of WD software where I have to enter password and then the HD gets unlock. but then the message appears that i need to be formatted before you, i try formatting it but it says format error everytime i try... what program can i use to format it or is there a way..

I suspect the drive has failed and you will need to replace it.

The reason this happens is because the drive may be faulty. This could also happen if you remove the external drive without using the Safely Remove Hardware option.You could restart your computer and try using a different USB Port and see if it work. Else using a recovery software would help you
