Running downloaded softwares

Hello,
I have MacOS.
I have downloaded on my macbook two free softwares - one a pdf creator and the other Kannada Baraha.
I am not able to figure out running the softwares on mac so that they could be setup.
The icons of the downloaded softwares are on the desktop. Whenever the icons are clicked at, it leads to Applications, asking to choose the type of application. Which ones to choose?. I am a new user to Mac. I was earlier using WindowsXP.
