The Binding of Isaac is an indie game that was developed by Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl. In this game, players control a boy called Isaac (and later unlock other characters) while he wanders in nightmarish dungeons and tries to survive. The game was originally released in 2011 for Windows and later for Linux and macOS. In this article, we discuss some of the game’s key features, as well as some additional information.

Key features

Here are some of the main features of The Binding of Isaac:

  • Plot: What is the story of The Binding of Isaac? Isaac tries to escape from his mother and to do so, he jumps into a trap in his room, leading to his basement. His mother is following what she thinks are the orders of God, telling her to save her son from his sins and later, to sacrifice Isaac in order to prove her devotion.

  • Gameplay: The Binding of Isaac is a top-down dungeon crawler game where, in the style of roguelike games, the levels are procedurally-generated. To confront his enemies, Isaac (and the other playable characters) use his tears, as well as power-ups that he stumbles upon. There are three types of power-ups: passive, active, and single-use. Once the character clears a zone, the monsters don’t respawn.

  • The Binding of Isaac characters: There are 7 playable characters: 6 in the base game, and 1 in the DLC Wrath of the Lamb. They include Isaac, Magdalene, Cain, Judas, Eve, ???, and Samson.

  • The Binding of Isaac items: There are 6 categories of items in the game: activated, passive, pills, Tarot cards, pick-ups, and trinkets. The full items list and their descriptions is available online.

Is The Binding of Isaac Scary?

The Binding of Isaac contains gory characters and effects, although they are 2D and don’t feature much details. Other than that, the game doesn’t use other elements that are common in horror games, such as jumpscares and tension building.

What do the critics say?

The Binding of Isaac received a generally positive reception with a score of 84 points on Metacritic.

”With Binding, McMillen and Himsl created the rules of the world and then set it in motion. Yet this game is nearly as much fun as Super Meat Boy, and more profound. It proves that there's more than one way to make a masterpiece.” (Eurogamer)

Is The Binding of Isaac free?

No, the game is not free. But how much does the binding of Isaac cost? The game can be purchased for $4.99.
