Hello,
This issue may have several explanations:
1. Your friend was using a battery optimization feature/app on their phone.
2. Your friend was using the data saver option.
3. Your friend disabled a background process related to Instagram.
4. Data in the background couldn't properly sync over mobile data connection (go to Settings -> Data Usage -> Instagram -> check the status of 'Restrict app background data').
