My son had his old ipod stolen. He is mentally handicapped but had loaded several hundred songs via his PC with windos XP. The songs are still there. So we purchased a new Ipod and tried to down load existing songs . When we hooked up his new I-pod we received an error message indicating we need to install I-Tunes version 8. We went to web site and downloaded version 8. He has AOL with dial up so it took several hours to down load newer version. After download was completed we again hooked up his ipod but got the same message asking for version 8. We did this twice with same result. Is the problem caused by the slow speed of dial up or ???

hi there,

uninstall the previous versions of i tunes

then install the new version

use an uninstaller to remove it completely from the system

or use these steps:

1. Quit iTunes.
2. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
3. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.
4. Select iTunes from the list of currently installed programs, then click Remove.
5. When asked if you would like to remove iTunes, select Yes.
6. After the uninstallation is complete, do not restart if you are prompted to.
7. If other entries were present for iTunes remove those as well.
8. In Add or Remove Programs, remove any iPod Updater applications
that are listed in the same fashion as iTunes was removed.
9. Restart your computer.
10. After the computer restarts, open Local Disk (C:) in Computer
or whichever disk programs are installed on.
11. Open the Program Files folder.
12. Right-click the iTunes folder and select Delete and choose Yes
when asked to confirm the deletion. Note: This folder may have already
been deleted if iTunes was successfully removed in steps 1-7.
13. Right-click the iPod folder and select Delete and choose
Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Click Continue if Windows
needs confirmation or permission to continue.
14. Right-click on the Recycle Bin and on the shortcut menu, click Empty Recycle Bin.
15. Restart your computer.

then reinstall latest version

Thank you for your speedy reply.......

I'll give it a try when I see my son on Thursday. One question he has hundreds of songs on his computer in a previous version of I-tunes. How can we save them and reinstall them in the new version 8. I can't believe that mac would upgrade and existing version without the ability to transfer all previously recorded songs,
