Hello everyone,

First of all, I want to state I really don't know too much about computers. I know a little but I really don't know all the names/fuctions/etc. and I'm going to try and make this say exactly what my computer is doing but I may have a few of the words jumbled because my computer is at home being stupid and I'm at work trying to earn money to buy a new one. :p

Anyway, last night my computer automatically restarted itself in order for my latest set of Windows updates to take affect. After it restarted, it came up with the usual screen that states it is installing the updates, Step 1 of 3 and then the percentage of it being complete. After completing the first and sometimes the second step, my computer will suddenly restart again and then the screen with state "Loading Files" and then come up with a screen that says Windows could not start and that it is scanning the files to repair. After doing this for several minutes it tells me that it must restart and to click "Finish" to restart. I do so and my computer restarts and then loops right back to the Installing Updates screen and once again, after completing Step 1 or Step 2 it restarts and goes to the Loading Files screen and then to the Windows cannot start and the the repair scan. It looped like this all night long and then again was doing it this morning when I left for work.

Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Opearating System: Windows Vista

Also, I don't really know how to do a System Restore and am concerned I will loose all my files. I also don't have a backup, though most of what is on my hard drive is music (all gotten in the legal way though a complete pain to import).

Installed the latest update to my Vista running laptop. It didn't have any problems rebooting but it was incredibly slow to process the start up and any program. I thought it was from a recent free MMO that I'd installed. Removed all files of the MMO in safe mode, restarted and ta da... black screen after the password log in. Just sits there and does nothing. Tried restart in every way possible.. safe mode, safe mode with prompt, and system restore to over a month ago, plus a few other dates. Nothing solves the problem. Boots, offers log in for password and bam... black screen once more.

The laptop didn't come with a Vista disk and my PC runs XP. At this point... if I have to lose everything on it fine, just so long as I can get it back up and running. Is there a command in the Config to boot off system defaults or original settings? I'm not sure if its the removal of the MMO's files or the latest update that has caused this problem.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you so much! :)

1.) load vista cd

2.) hit f2 to ennet set up

3.) disable boot from Hard drive and enable boot from cd

4.) load vitsa again

your old files will be copied to Windows.old folder but OS and other program functionality will be wiped out!!!!!!!!!!

Dude wen you do a system restore, you wont loose your personal files on your comp apart from .exe executive files and the programs that are installed after the date you restore to....
System Restore helps you restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal files, such as e‑mail, documents, or photos.
Restart the computer and try tapping F11 while your computer is booting up, and make sure you start tapping before you see windows screen, or else try restarting again..
Or you can try tapping F8 and select safe mode. Once logged on, use command prompt to run restore - as the option isnt available in safe mode - type rstrui.exe - this will then run system restore and you can choose your restore point. or Start-Allprograms-accessories-systemtools-sys restore.
or you can type in sys recovery in start search and initiate restore ;-)

hi

Vista uploaded some updates that didn't install properly. Now when I start my computer I have the icon on my shutdown buttin indicating it needs to install updates when I shut down - problem is it doesn't install those updates. System restore does nothing - in fact it just takes me back to the same place. System Restore has not been creating a new system checkpoint. It pretty much is ina cycle. I can't even change the Windows Update to say NOT to download and install updates. I can't load the installed updates in programs and features to uninstall the updates.

If I shut down the computer as soon as I login I can shut down and avoid going through the blue screen telling me its installing updates. However, next time I login I can't load a lot of programs - Windows udpates, and programs I need to install, IE. I can load Help and Support and MS Office, but eventually everything freezes and I have to shut down. My IASAC adpaters also have problems when I load Windows . The only way for me to get back to normal is a system restore, but now I have the same problem where my computer is super slow because it's trying to install updates but it can't. I am also unable to install SP2 for Vista.

System retore doesn't work. Updates won't load. I can't install programs. I have no virus. What do I do? Reinstall Windows is not an option, because I know this can be fixed, I just don't know how. I am sure it is a reg problem, but I don't know what software I can use to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated!

I have a dell windows vista or however u say it (I'm 14 :P)
what I did was when the computer starts press f8 and at the very top u might see an option saying repair computer(if you don't see it........to bad) now keep going through the setup thing until it shows some options
click restore computer(it might say it's already launching) now pick a time where you didn't update your computer and wait for it to restore
it will restart and BOOM BABY!!!!!!
it should now bring you to the startup menu!!!!
but then again, if it didn't work....try doing the same thing but restore at a more earlier point.

that's about it.......FILIPINO PRIDE!!!!!!!!!

bye, wannabe computer guru :)

I also had this problem, And it is NOT hard to fix. I'm going to help you all because I understand its a hard thing to handle and you all have important things to do with your computer. This is for people that JUST installed Windows Vista, and all you have to do is follow 10 simple steps.

_STEPS_

1. Get your windows vista 32-bit or 64-bit disk. Insert it into your computer.

2. Shut down your computer and restart it immediately.

3. When you turn it back on, Press any key to activate the disk.

4. When the windows checking file load up finishes your computer will restart and go into the installation.

5. there will be 2 messages on the bottom. The second message saying "Repair computer" click it.

6. When your there I beleive theres 5 options select the "Restore computer"

7. This will restore your computer to another point.

6. Select the date or point you would like to restore to and click "Restore"

7. Your CPU Is now finish restoring.

8. Restart your computer.

9. Take out the disk 32-bit or 64-bit.

10. WALLAHHH!! YOUR CPU IS DONE NO MORE CRAPY LOOP!

there you go end of discussion >.>

If your having issues with hd space there is a few things you can do. One of the main things is gonna be defragging your hard drive. Defraggler works great and its free at defraggler.com. Also go through and remove any unused or unwanted programs under control panel in ad or remove programs. After you have done those two things, run Ccleaner, free download from Ccleaner.com. These three things alone should show substantial improvement. Good luck.

I experienced this same thing on two different computers both running windows xp pro. I know the cause and I have the solution only need a windows xp cd licensed copy and minimal computer knowledge. The cause is the download of service pack 3 for windows. Look below for step -by-step directions and you will not lose any of your data.

1. insert Windows XP cd (or equivalent operating system) and shutdown computer wait 1 minute and power it on. when prompted press any key to boot from cd.

2.Select (R) for repair windows and select your boot drive (usually c:)

3. Type your admin password if setup( used only if you use a password to log in to windows.) Press ENTER

4. At C:\ windows > type CHKDSK \P press ENTER ,when completed, type FIXMBR press ENTER ,when completed, type FIXBOOT press ENTER ,when completed, type CHKDSK \P press ENTER ,when completed, type EXIT and remove Windows cd from cdrom drive.

5. While rebooting tap F8 rapidly and repeatedly until boot options menu appears scroll up to safe mode.

6. Once your computer is at the desktop follow these directions to remove SP3...

START_SETTINGS_CONTROL PANEL_ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS. PLACE A CHECK IN THE BOX ON THE TOP TO SHOW UPDATES. FIND AND SELECT WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 3. CLICK REMOVE AND FOLLOW ANY INSTRUCTIONS AND AGREE TO EVERYTHING. ONCE REMOVED RESTART COMPUTER IMMEDIATELY AND REMOVE THE WINDOWS CD IF NOT ALREADY DONE... BADDA BING BADDA BOOM WINDOWS IS UP AND RUNNING. DO NOT EVER DOWNLOAD SP3 AGAIN UNTIL MICROSOFT RELEASES A NEW VERSION SINCE THIS ONE DOES NOT WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YOUR WELCOME TO ALL,
MOOSE

I have a very similar issue and its not after a update. All of a sudden my computer started not booting up and I get a error saying the following:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click next.
3. Click repair your computer

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: ksecdd.sys

Status: 0xc00000e9

Info: Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt.

I have formatted and installed from the original boot disk that came with my computer about three times and to no avail. Repair says it cannot repair automatically and I'm out of ideas. If any else has any ideas please let me know. This is very frustrating...

Okay, I've had SIMILAR problems, only I'm running Vista off of a emachines/Gateway computer. What happened was I was trying to update to Internet Explorer 8 but when the computer went to restart, it decided to update. I didn't think anything of it because I've never had problems before, so I went in the living room to watch TV for a bit. So, I didn't see what happened. All I know is at some point, my computer tried to reboot, but failed.

I came back and had a black screen with white text, and at the top it said "Windows Error Recovery", and said that the computer had failed to start up due to a recent software change (and I don't know if it was the update or the installation of IE 8.) There was only two options: Launch Startup Repair, which doesn't work, and Start Windows Normally, which also doesn't work.

I tried the F8 option, but NOTHING ON THE LIST WORKS. Not Safe mode of any kind, nothing. No options. Everything leads me back to the "Windows Error Recovery" screen and those two options that simply do not work.

To say I'm frustrated is an understatement at this point.

Is there any way to access Command Prompt without F8? Or to get to the Windows Restore option without having to start Windows?

I'm making a list of the suggestions made, but I don't see anything dealing with my specific problem so I just posted it, in case someone had a more specific solution. I'm still going to try the other solutions. Hopefully something will work

I chose "Launch startup repair" and it worked. I just needed to be patient to wait for windows to repair it, cause it took quite a while. I didn't know how I ended in that option. I only remembered trying to restart several times and press F8 several times. It was luck, I guess :)

Hey,

Actually I tried that but none of the options worked. It just kept going back to the black screen. :(

I borrowed my brother's computer for now, but I'm thinking when I get the chance, I'm going to take it to a repair shop and get it fixed.

I'm beyond the warranty period though, so it's probably going to cost me.

It's happend to me three times now so I turned off my windows updates completely, it seems to be the only way my computer will run. I would like to know when this problem with the updates is going to get fixed so people stop having problems?
