My 80 gb ipod classic's buttons wont work he

Hello,

so my friends dad had got this ipod and gave it to me brand new. when i plug it in it charges fine and poped up just fine on the ipod. when i unplugged it from the computer, the screen comes on but none of the buttons on the front will work it wont even scroll. it is NOT on hold ive checked and i rebooted it, but the buttons still wont work. any suggestions?
