Hello Esther
If you click on start then on run, type cmd a black screen will appear, you are then in command prompt.
As for internet, you must reconfigure your connection, your internet service provider is best to tell you how, free of charge.
Good luck

SP2 is your problem. XP ended with SP3. You have a boat anchor! You cannot connect by design. Do not load 8 onto that machine as you will not be satisfied!

Correct, some people still connect to Internet, however they have SP3. Mind you, they are vulnerable to piracy. There are no longer any security updates.
May be that Esther's computer could support Windows 7 if still available.

Oh thank you for “cmd”; I’ve learnt something.
About the Internet connection: I’ve already contacted my provider and as it’s working with my laptop using Windows 7, they said they cannot help me as they have a lot of complaints from people using Windows XP.
However, something happened yesterday: I’ve managed to open one or two web pages – I don’t know why or how! – and that was all.
If you can help me again, it would be great.
Have a very good day.

Your ISP is correct, XP is no longer supported.
Are you sure to have sp2? If you have restored your pc to factory settings you may have reverted to sp1.
After SP2 Windows issued a major update with SP3.
See this page for all the details and proceed with the necessary upgrades as need be. It should resolve your browsing issue.

Good luck

I checked on the system; that is where I found out it was “Service Pack 2” (I didn’t know actually).
About SP3, I remember that I’ve had a lot of problems with my computer after I updated it with SP3.
In any case, I don’t know how I could download it as I don’t have Internet connection.
Thank you.

I used sp3 for years without any issue, as a matter of a fact my system worked better with it.

I can’t browse the Internet actually; as I said “I’ve managed to open one or two web pages – I don’t know why or how! – and that was all”.
I mean I have not been able to go further. Each time, there is an error message like “the page is not available” “the page cannot be found”, or an error code,…
The page I can open is my network supplier homepage and then there are some more messages saying:
“You should modify your browser settings”
“Server not found”
“DNS error”
Thank you for trying to help me.
Have a good day.
Esther
