When adding files to my external hard drive they disappear

Hello,

When adding files into a folder on my external hard drive they will go to it and then disappear, when adding the same file it still gives me a prompt saying that one file already has that name. sometimes if I am fast enough I can see it appear and then disappear I have made sure they are not hidden files/folders
Any help would be awesome, thank you
