Reset PC to factory settings: Windows 11, 10, 8.1

Most computers and laptops allow you to reset your device to factory settings in order to repair certain serious issues that you may be experiencing due to a software bug. This article will run through the most basic process for resetting your computer to its default state. How to reset your PC on Windows 11?

  • Open the Start menu by clicking on the Windows icon on the taskbar.

  • Select Settings System > Recovery.

  • Under the section named Reset this PC, select Get started, and then choose from the options and/or settings depending on whether you want to keep your files.

How to reset your PC on Windows 10?

  • Open the Start menu by clicking on the Windows icon on the taskbar.

  • Select Settings Update & Security > Recovery.

  • Under the section named Reset this PC, select Get started, and then choose from the options and/or settings depending on whether you want to keep your files.

How to reset your PC on Windows 8.1?

  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings. If you're using a mouse, point to the screen's upper-right corner, move the mouse pointer down, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.
  • Click on Update and recovery > Recovery.
  • If you want to keep your files, under Refresh your PC without affecting your files, click on Get started.
  • If you want to erase your files, under Remove everything and reinstall Windows, click on Get started.
  • Follow the instructions.
