External monitor only showing background

Hello, yesterday I connected my dell external monitor to my toshiba laptop. Anyways everything was fine and working till about an hour ago when it just went blank. I looked at the settings on display and started changing stuff (pretty sure I've made it worse) but now all I can see is the background picture from my laptop. Please help!! It's driving me insane!

Also I've just realised if I put my mouse off the screen to the right the mouse icon appears on the external screen...=S

You changed the external monitor to be an extended display (extra room for the laptop screen) and not a duplicate fo the laptop screen.

so how do you change it to mirror the stuff on the computer screen??
