After connecting the external monitor, have you used the Function (FN) key + F4 (For HP i think) to cycle the displays from the laptop to the external monitor?
Use the Function (FN) key + F4 If memory serves for HP laptops (if it is not the F4 button, look on your keyboard keys for the one with a small square that looks like a monitor that has the same face color as the FN key) to cycle the internal / external monitors. Cycle should be Internal Display only, Internal Display and External Display, External Display only.
