My Packard Bell turns on but screen stays black

When I turn on my Packard bell the power light comes on, the fan comes on briefly then shuts off. The power light will stay on till the battery runs out. The screen is as if the laptop is off and the laptop doesn't seem to be processing anything. I'm not sure if there is a problem with the wiring to connect to the screen.
As a note the disk tray still opens when power is on.
I'm a total novice so any help would be great.

As a "total novice" there is little you can do but take it to a professional to repair it. A local repair shop can give you a repair estimate. Unfortunately, it often costs more to repair a laptop than to replace it.
