hi there,
ive been having this problem where suddenly ive got a red X(cross) on my volume icon.
Before any1 says this, its not on mute.

I have tried everything I have read on the internet.

I have gone to device manager, tried the scan for hardware change ... tried the upgrade drivers and even uninstalled and reinstalled.

i even went to ''services'' and tried starting the audio there... nothing happens

IS this the same laptop as the dvd rom? If it is, you have to look at what is in common with both "drivers" missing. It is the MB. Probably bad.

if it is flakey, one moment works, the next doesn't. it is failing.

1. ONE change at a time
2. what is in common
3. known goods

The cheapest and quickest way to determine bad mb, is go and get another dvd rom drive, they are like $15US. It would be known good. If you get the same idication with it, the MB is bad. You will always have another drive to t shoot with. If it works, then you have fixed it, and you know it is n't the mother board.

Ok, at this point, the best thing for you to do, is go to the HP site, click on support, and the site will scrub your pc for problems. Have you tried the HP fixit page here:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/

If not , it might be a good start, or end.
