Acer laptop will not recognize projector thru hdmi

Hello,
my acer laptop will not recognize projector using hdmi cable. both are new machines. When I plug hdmi to my laptop it will not recognize the cable. I have not tried much cause not sure what to try. Any help would be greatly appreciated
