No Internet - No Sound

My XP problem is the same as these:

I was going to follow the steps provided in those pages but decided it would be a lot safer to ask for expert advice.

I don't know how to find out my CPU info but I'll post what I can...
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3
If there's more you need I can try to find them if I can.

I've scanned for viruses using AVG but didn't find anything.
The problem first occurred after updating some automatic updates on August 13th.
