The first trailer for GTA 6 has just been released! This article will gather all of the information that is currently available about Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), such as the release date, the setting, protagonists and more.

When is the GTA 6 release date?

The wait is over, the GTA 6 release trailer has been unveiled by Rockstar in December 2023, it was scheduled to be released on the 5th December at 9am ET, however there was a leak on social media, so Rockstar released it early. We finally have the first official look at one of the most anticipated games of all time. At the end of the trailer, the release date for GTA 6 has been given as 2025.

What have we learnt from the first trailer?

Here is a breakdown of the key details that we have been shown in the first GTA 6 trailer.

Release and Title:

GTA 6 is set to arrive in 2025, as revealed in the trailer. The official title for the game is simply "Grand Theft Auto VI."

Setting:

Players will be taken back to Vice City which has previously featured in classic GTA titles. In GTA 6, it will be shown in the present day, in the age of influencers. The map has yet to be revealed, although from the trailer we see a wide range of locations, from swamps, beaches, exotic coastlines, city streets, country towns and more. 

Dual Protagonists:

The trailer introduces two protagonists, bringing a dual protagonist system back to the GTA series. One of the protagonists is Lucia, marking the first-ever female hero in the long-running GTA franchise. 

The male protagonist, while not confirmed with a name in the trailer, was previously rumored as James in a GTA 6 leak from September 2022. Other sources suggest the name Jason. The exact name remains unconfirmed, but the trailer indicates a romantic connection between the two characters.

Romantic Relationship and Dynamic:

Lucia and her yet-to-be-named male partner-in-crime share a romantic and dynamic relationship, reminiscent of a Bonnie and Clyde style narrative. The trailer showcases the duo engaging in various activities in Vice City, including high-speed pursuits on a speedboat, sports car, and motorcycle.

Speculated Character Connection:

The characters are shown tyre-squealing away in a car, hinting at the likelihood of their criminal activities, including possible car theft. The narrative suggests a close connection between the two protagonists, and their intertwined destinies are expected to unfold as players progress through the game.

Are there any GTA 6 leaks?

Has GTA 6 Leaked? Yes. There was a massive leak in September 2022. Early footage of GTA 6 has been leaked by an illegal hack. There are around 90 videos containing content from the game, which is still in development. The videos contain clips of the game in its testing / debug mode. There are some sections with character dialogue, and other clips of action sequences (car chases, shoot outs, robberies etc). Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company is issuing takedown notices for the videos so we won't be sharing any content here (although a quick Google search and you should be able to find it). GTA 6 has also been referred to as "GTA VI Project Americas". 

In the videos we see two playable characters, a female named Lucia, and a male named James, or Jason. In one video there is a switch between the characters like in GTA 5, however this switch occurs almost instantly. A main detail from these videos is the location, it seems almost certain that GTA 6 will take place in Vice City, as we see the Vice City Metro. A neat feature that we saw is the ability to put the characters in prone mode (crawling on the floor). A subtle, but impressive detail was the character moving an object out of their way as they were crawling into a warehouse. 

What does the GT6 map look like? 

What is the GTA 6 location? This is one of the most talked about topics surrounding GTA 6. After the first trailer, it has been confirmed that GTA 6 will return to Vice City (real life Miami), and Leonida (Florida). The official map has not yet been released, although the trailer gave us an insight into the enormous scale of GTA 6. It is rumoured that the map will be considerably bigger than the already impressive map of GTA 5, around 2-3 times the size. This is based on the gaming community using the coordinates that were found in the 2022 GTA 6 leaks, and comparing them with similar coordinates for the GTA 5 map. 

Which platforms will GTA 6 be available?

GTA 6 will be released on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S. The name game is next-gen only, and a release date for the PC version has not been given.

How big will the file size be?

It is rumoured that GTA 6 will require 200GB of storage space on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This is not surprising considering the trend for larger and larger file sizes. Looking at the graphics and the character models that were showcased in the first GTA 6 trailer, 200GB seems feasible. If you consider that the latest Rockstar Game release of Red Dead Redemption 2 required 150GB, and GTA 5 required 100GB, 200GB for GTA 6 almost seems too few.
