How to update iPhone 5: to latest iOS
As of November 3, 2019, iPhone 5 requires an iOS update to maintain accurate GPS location and continue using features that rely on date and time, such as App Store, iCloud, email, and web browsing. GPS time rollover issue began to affect GPS-enabled products from other manufacturers on April 6, 2019.
Update the iPhone 5
- Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
- Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
- Go to Settings > General, and tap Software Update.
- If you see two software update options available, choose the one that you want to install.
- Tap Install Now or Download and Install > Install Now.
- If a message asks to temporarily remove apps because the software needs more space for the update, tap Continue to allow apps to be removed. After installation is complete, those apps are automatically reinstalled.
Update the iPhone 5 on macOS (Catalina or later)
- Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
- Open a Finder window on a Mac with macOS Catalina or later.
- Connect your device to your computer.
- Select your device in the left sidebar of the Finder window.
- Click General, then click Check for Update.
- Click Download and Update and continue by following the on-screen instructions.
Update the iPhone 5 on macOS (Mojave or earlier)
- Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
- Open iTunes on your Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier or on your Windows PC.
- Connect your device to your computer.
- Click the device button in the iTunes toolbar.
- In the Summary tab, click Check for Update.
- Click Download and Update and continue by following the on-screen instructions.
