Every since its first appearance, Microsoft PowerPoint has revolutionized the way people make presentations to showcase their ideas and projects, both in educational and professional fields. The possibilities of PowerPoint are infinite. You can enrich your slides with text, graphics, images, animations, audio, and much more. The software also supports collaboration, meaning that you can invite other users to work on the same project in real-time.

Key features

  • Microsoft PowerPoint allows you to create a slideshow from scratch, or take advantage of one of the predesigned templates that are included in the application. There are free templates as well as multiple premium ones.
  • Personalization: You have the freedom to change the colors, theme, font, and many other aspects to tailor your presentation exactly as you had in mind.
  • Multimedia elements: You can enrich your slides by adding images, graphical elements, and data tables in order for you to achieve the objective of your presentation. Likewise, PowerPoint supports the embedding of video clips, audio, hyperlinks, etc.

  • You can also include a multitude of effects and transition that will bring your exhibition to life. One of our personal favorites is the Morph transition, which allows you to smoothly animate the movement from one slide to the next.
  • Collaborate: Recent versions of PowerPoint allow you to share your presentation with others, and collaboratively work on it at the same time. The software shows you exactly where others are working on the document. Moreover, you can keep track of changes and communicate with each other through chat and comments.
  • PowerPoint also includes a virtual Presenter Coach. This is an AI-powered tool that gives you feedback in real-time on your presentation and speaking skills.

How much does PowerPoint cost?

Microsoft PowerPoint is part of Microsoft 365, which is a commercially licensed office suite. You can either purchase it as a single license of the Microsoft Office pack or as a part of the Microsoft 365 pack. As usual, the more user licenses your plan will include, the less it will cost you per user. Microsoft offers a 1-month free trial period for new users.

The Office license is sold as a one-time purchase you have to pay up-front and has no upgrade option which means that you will have to pay at full price if you want to upgrade to a new major release.

The Office 365 plan includes all the up-to-date Microsoft office software in a single seamless integrated experience. It also offers extra online storage and advanced collaboration features. With Office 365 you no longer have to worry about using the last version of your office software.

Microsoft has a very flexible commercial business model so you will be able to choose among different plans depending on your needs. It includes the Family plan which allows you to share Microsoft Office with several other people, and the Personal plan if you only need one license.

Microsoft has a special subscription plan for companies and enterprises which depends on your type of business and your company’s size, and of course there are also special plans for students and teachers. Find all the available offers on Microsoft's official website.

Other alternatives

Microsoft PowerPoint is undoubtedly the world's most popular application for creating slideshows, it is not the only option on the market. A good and free to use alternative is Google Slides, which is completely cloud-based. If you are keen on making visually attractive presentations Canva could be the right choice for you. Another tool worth considering is Prezi.
