Battlefield 2042 is the sixth chapter of one of the most epic and popular war games in the world. Developed by EA, Battlefield 2042 comes with an original storyline, new game modes, the largest maps ever created for the game, and the possibility to play as a team in breathtaking combats.
Plot
As the name suggests, the game is set in 2042, but the story begins back in 2031 when the climate crisis is exacerbated. Hurricanes and rising sea levels are pushing millions of people to leave their countries. This crowd of people, called the No-Pats, is at the heart of the game. Flash forward to 2037, things seem to be going back to normal, with a major energy revolution. However, there are 1.2 billion people without a homeland who develop a new identity, that don't trust the government, and No-Pat leaders emerge.
The world is rebuilding itself, but old rivalries between the United States and Russia re-emerge. And in 2040, the so-called Blackout occurs. A space debris storm affects the functioning of 70% of the satellites that orbit the Earth. The reason is unknown but what is the impact on Earth? Plane crashes, cuts in communication networks, skyrocketing prices, and possibly thousands of deaths.
And who is responsible for this? Americans and Russians blame each other. There is also suspicion that the No-Pats are behind the events, wanting to bring chaos to the world. And chaos there is. US and Russia enter an all-out war, hiring groups of No-Pats to combat.
You are one of those No-Pats. You must fight for your survival and the world's, as a whole.
Gameplay
-
Maps: The Battlefield 2042 maps are the largest ever created for the franchise and allow up to 128 players, which is also the highest number ever in the series. There is a total of seven maps when the game launches. Each map aims to provide players a unique experience from real-life places: Orbital is set in Kourou, French Guiana, Hourglass is in Doha, Qatar, Kaleidoscope in Songdo, South Korea, Manifest in Brani Island, Singapore, Discarded in Alang, India, Breakaway in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica, and Renewal in Eastern Desert, Egypt.
-
Specialists: Another new feature of Battlefield 2042 is the Specialist system. Based on the four original game classes, each Specialist has their own Specialty and Trait, with the possibility to customize all the rest! This also means that players can choose their Specialist and customization in a way to increase the synergy within the team and optimize their chances of winning. At launch, there are 10 Specialists available: Kimble "Irish" Graves, Webster Mackay, Maria Falck, Pyotr “Boris” Guskovsky, Wikus “Casper” van Daele, Navin Rao, Santiago "Dozer" Espinoza, Emma "Sundance" Rosier, Constantin "Angel" Anghel, and Ji-Soo Paik.
-
Live Service: In line with other multiplayer shooters, Battlefield 2042 will have seasonal releases every three months with two new Battle Passes, one free and one paid. This way, the game's story will continue to progress and new Specialists and content will be added, including maps and weapons.
-
Bots: To practice your skills, you will have the possibility to play training sessions against the AI.
Graphics and sound
Battlefield 2042 runs on a new version of the popular Frostbite game engine. Compared to previous installments in the Battlefield series, there have been massive improvements in terms of visuals. As always, the game's audio design is simply epic. Especially if you own a good set of speakers of headphones, you will really get the feeling that you are in the middle of an actual war battle.
Duration and game modes
Battlefield 2042 brings back the classic Conquest and Breakthrough modes that fans of the series are already familiar with. In addition, there are two other modes. The first one, called Hazard Zone, promises a brand new, high-stakes, and squad-based experience. The second new mode called Portal gives players endless possibilities as they can customize the rules, weapons, and gears, and even replay the experience of previous installments in the series with a selected content.
For the first time in the history of the series, there is no single-player campaign to be found in Battlefield 2042. For that reason it is difficult to define the duration of the game. You can participate in as many battles as you want!
What do the reviews say?
Battlefield 2042 is currently rated 68/100 on Metacritic. In other words, the game has received rather mixed reviews.
"Battlefield 2042 should have been a triumphant return of the franchise and developer. In some respects, Battlefield 2042 delivers on its promises thanks to fantastic gameplay, a suite of new features and improvements, and a presentation that looks as good as it plays. Unfortunately, the game falls short just as much, if not more." (Hardcore Gamer)
