GTA 6 : release date, trailer, map, leaks and rumors

This article will gather all the information that is currently available about Rockstar Games' GTA 6, such as the possible release year, the setting, a look at a potential leaked map, and a the September 2022 video leak. In this article we explore everything we know about GTA 6 so far!

When is the GTA 6 release date ?

To date, there has been no official GTA 6 announcement, neither has there been any statement from Rockstar Games about the much anticipated follow up to GTA 5, however considering the massive success that is GTA 5, it is almost certain that Rockstar will release GTA 6 There is currently no official release date for GTA 6 or any official press release to answer the question of when is GTA 6 coming out. The current best estimate can be made based on previous release history, some guesswork, and a possible leak (which will be discussed below). GTA 5 was initially released on September 17th, 2013 on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and it then released on the PS4 and Xbox One on November 18th 2014. With GTA 5 being released on the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X in the second half of 2021, it doesn’t seem likely that there will be a GTA 6 trailer in 2022, or any information about the GTA 6 release date.

At best, GTA 6 could be released in September 2024, based on nothing being announced in 2022, and a first GTA 6 trailer being released in 2023, allowing 1 year of marketing before GTA 6 is finally released. Another major Rockstar property is Red Dead, and the follow up to Red Dead Redemption (released in 2010), Red Dead Redemption 2 was released in October 2018, 8 years after RDR. RDR2 was released 5 years after GTA 5. If we continue this “trend” and GTA 6 is released 5 years after the release of RDR2, then that would again give GTA 6 the possible release window of 2023. Although a release date of 2024 could be envisageable.

Are there any GTA 6 leaks ?

Has GTA 6 Leaked? Yes. There was a massive leak in September 2022. Early footage of GTA 6 has been leaked by an illegal hack. There are around 90 videos containing content from the game, which is still in development. The videos contain clips of the game in its testing / debug mode. There are some sections with character dialogue, and other clips of action sequences (car chases, shoot outs, robberies etc). Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company is issuing takedown notices for the videos so we won't be sharing any content here (although a quick Google search and you should be able to find it).

In the videos we see two playable characters, a female named Lucia, and a male named Jason. In one video there is a switch between the characters like in GTA 5, however this switch occurs almost instantly. A main detail from these videos is the location, it seems almost certain that GTA 6 will take place in Vice City, as we see the Vice City Metro. A neat feature that we saw is the ability to put the characters in prone mode (crawling on the floor). A subtle, but impressive detail was the character moving an object out of their way as they were crawling into a warehouse.

What does the GT6 map look like?

What is the GTA 6 location? This is one of the most talked about topics surrounding GTA 6. Many of the rumours about GTA 6 have suggested a return to Vice City (Miami) with the presence of a region in South America where drugs will be smuggled in from. Whilst, again, no official announcement has been made by Rockstar, there is much speculation.

Another rumour has suggested that GTA 6 will feature multiple cities. Using the next generation of consoles to make one of the largest open worlds ever made. GTA could revisit Liberty City (New York), Las Venturas (Las Vegas) and also Los Santos (Los Angeles), although this trio of cities seems unlikely. GTA 6 will most likely not feature Los Santos, the main photo GTA 5.

According to the leaker, GTA_VI_Leak on reddit, GTA 6 will feature Vice City, Liberty City, and Cottonmouth, Carcer City, lots of swamps and countryside surrounding Vice City, and several South American islands to the south of the map.

Interestingly, both Carcer City, and Cottonmouth already exist within the Rockstar Game’s universe and can be found in the Manhunt series.

  • Carcer City is loosely based on Chicago, Detroit, Flint and other “Rust Belt” cities.
  • Cottonmouth, which according to Rockstar Games, is inspired by large southern US cities, such as New Orleans, Charleston and Atlanta.
  • Vice City, based on Miami, and the location of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
  • Liberty City, based on New York and the surrounding area. The location for GTA 4.

Again, no official map has been released, however there are several fan made maps. These maps combine several cities and are much larger in size than previous GTA and RDR maps. Below is a map based on supposedly leaked information. It contains the above mentioned cities, and a South American location.

Who are the GTA 6 protagonists ?

No official announcement has been made about the GTA 6 playable characters. GTA 5 had 3 playable characters and the interchangeability between them was an excellent addition in terms of gameplay. In the September 2022 leak, it appears that there will be at least 2 playable characters, and the switch feature has returned.

Where can I watch the GTA 6 Trailer ?

As of early 2021, there is no GTA 6 trailer. As soon as it is released we will update this article with it. It is rumoured that a GTA 6 trailer will be released in 2022, or early 2023. From the leak in September 2022, a first teaser trailer is reported to be shown in Q3 2022 (although this would only give Rockstar until the 30th September to release this). With the leak, it is probable that Rockstar pushes the trailer release back into Q4. The final release of the game is rumoured to be Q4 2024, over 10 years after GTA 5 was released.

Which platforms will GTA 6 be available ?

GTA 6 should be released on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is unlikely that GTA 6 will be released on the PS4 or Xbox One due to the technical limitations of these previous consoles.
