Create and Open a RAR file

For file compression the RAR file format is necessary, and it uses a file extension name of .rar. To create a RAR file, data compression utilities that support RAR formats must be downloaded. There are many utilities for this task, but the most commonly used one is WinRar which can create compressed .rar files. The free trial version of this software is available online and can be downloaded, to compress files. You can also open RAR files with the help of this utility, and it can also extract .rar files.



Create and Open a RAR file



RAR is an archive file format that is used during data compression, error recovery and file spanning. RAR is the acronym for Roshal Archive, inspired by the name of its developer, Eugene Roshal.

The extension name .rar is used during file compression processes. The most common data compression utility creating and extracting .rar files today is WinRAR.

How to create a RAR file


You must first download a data compression utility that supports RAR formats. The original version of WinRaR can both create compressed RAR files and extract them effectively.

  • 1. After installing the software on your computer system, select the folder that you want to compress and right click it
  • 2. Choose Add to archive from the list
  • 3. The Archive name and parameters window will pop up. From the General section, choose the name for the compressed folder in the Archive Name field
  • 4. Select where you want the compressed file to be saved
  • 5. Ensure that the Archive format is set to RAR and the Compression method set to the speed you want
  • 6. To confirm the file compression, press OK



To create a RAR file directly from the WinRAR program:
  • 1. Open WinRAR and select the folder that you want to compress from the list
  • 2. From the menu bar, select the Add icon - it will look the same as the shortcut icon for the WinRAR program
  • 3. The Archive name and parameters window will pop up. From the General section, choose the name for the compressed folder in the Archive Name field
  • 4. Select where you want the compressed file to be saved
  • 5. Ensure that the Archive format is set to RAR and the Compression method set to the speed you want
  • 6. To confirm the file compression, press OK

How to open a RAR file


As WinRAR can both compress and decompress files, it will be used to extract your archives in this example:
  • 1. Open the archive by double clicking on its icon
  • 2. When the WinRAR window pops up, select the folder that you want to extract and choose the Extract To icon (it should look like an open folder) from the menu bar
  • 3. From the General section, select where you want the folder to be extracted to
  • 4. You can also make changes to the Update Mode and Overwrite Mode section if you wish
  • 5. Click Save Settings and OK
